Radio Industry Facts, production and distribution

Facts:

  • Radio remains resilient, its the oldest broadcast medium.
  • Almost 90% of adults tune in on a weekly basis.
  • Radio listening increased in 2015 along with with increased revenue with overall growth of 1.4% to £519million.
  • UK adults spend majority of time spent listening to any audio is accounted for by live radio (71%
  • 16 to 24 year olds spend similar amounts of time with live radio (29%), personal digital audio (26%) and streaming services (25%)
  • PSB is responsible for the public.
  • In 2015 over 40% of radio was listened via a digital device. 
  • DAB network of transmitters was switched on in March 2016, bringing 15 unique radio stations to 75% of the UK.
  • Morning breakfast shows and afternoon drives are the highest paid radio broadcasts. 

New technology has help evolve and increase popularity:
  • Huge increase of people downloading podcasts and internet radio. Past broadcasts on websites therefore easy to access and in demand.
  • Studio webcams and social media make listeners feel more connected with the radio station. This type of media convergence is also achieved through blogs and forums. 

PSB:
Public service broadcasting is broadcasting intended for public benefit rather then to serve purely commercial interests for public service. Has to cater for age/gender/race etc. and a mix of education, information and entertainment (remit). OFCOM is in charge of ensuring broadcasters keep their PSB remits. RAJAR is how they control the audience and market figures of the of the country.

The BBC says they 100% fulfil their remit.

Radio 1: 
Breakfast show is the most listened to show on radio 1. They need to entertain and engage a broad range of young listeners with a distinctive mix of contemporary music and speech. Radio 1 lost 100,000 listeners in 2015. Nick Grimshaw hosts the show on weekdays from 6:33am to 10.00am. The breakfast show has been running since 1967 and Grimshaw took over from Chris Moyles to be the 15th presenter of the show in 2012. The show is produced in London.

Production of BBC Radio 1:
BBC Radio1 is broadcasted on FM, DAB, Freeview, freest, Virgin, Sky or online where it can be streamed/live for 30 days .
